Occasional acidity after a heavy or spicy meal is common. When heartburn and regurgitation happen frequently, it may be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic condition that needs proper management.
Occasional acidity
Usually triggered by large meals, oily food, late-night eating or stress, and settles with simple measures.
GERD
Symptoms occur two or more times a week, may disturb sleep, and can include chronic cough, hoarseness or difficulty swallowing. Long-standing reflux can inflame the food pipe.
When to see a gastroenterologist
- Heartburn most days of the week
- Difficulty or pain while swallowing
- Vomiting, black stools or weight loss
- Symptoms not improving with lifestyle changes
